Originally from Wisconsin, Scott call's Estes
Park and Colorado home. As a rehabilitator, bander, artist,
illustrator and author, birds are Scott's passion. He
spent several years under the guidance of Dr. Ronald Ryder,
Emeritus Professor from the
University of Colorado researching several species of birds.
Scott's interest in research is paramount, and makes him one of the most well
known aviary experts in Colorado. He was granted his Master Bander Permit
in 2000.
In 1994 Scott launched his bird banding program at The YMCA of
The Rockies and is one of the most popular at
the YMCA. It runs from early Spring to late Fall, and
everyone is welcome. From beginner to advanced, there is
always something to learn and see birds up close. Bird
count numbers can be found in the 'Banding' page, and is
updated regularly during the banding months.
Scott works locally with Law Enforcement, Animal Control as well
as the Division of Wildlife in the recovery, rehabilitation and
release of injured birds. He is directly associated with
The Birds of Prey Foundation located in Broomfield, Colorado.
Although Raptors are his specialty no bird goes ignored.
For Scott the size of the bird is not the issue, each bird gets
the same respect and care.
As an artist Scott works in Watercolor and makes it a rule to never paint a bird
that he hasn't had his hands on. His inspiration comes
from Cubism combined with Realism which makes his art his own.
Drawing on insight from Robert Bateman his attention to anatomy,
species, habitat, seasonal color and protection of the Earth is
some of the best you will find. His work is always
available and commissions are welcome.
In 2002, Scott illustrated Birding Rocky Mountain National
Park written by another Estes Park Birder: Scott Roderer.
